John_Cage wrote:Hi there.
I joined Dwayne's forum back in the day when the Justice League cartoon was just starting up and quickly got into the back-and-forth with the Maestro. By the time the summer of 2005 rolled around I figured I was enough of a familiar face to send him a PM and ask if there was anything (and I mean anything -- even sharpened down pencil nubs) from the JLU production office he could send me. He said they were out of production at the offices, but he'd find me something. And lo and behold weeks later I receive a JLU promotional card signed by the JLU creative team from the '05 SD comicon. Cool enough on it's own, but made immensely better by the fact that it was sent to me, a lowly fanboy, by Dwayne McDuffie himself. When I'd read that he was going to be at a convention in Detroit that fall I knew I had to meet him in person to thank him and try my best to ask incredibly nerdy questions.
So I made the drive down (about four hours from where I live and totally worth it) and got to shake Dwayne's hand and chat with him. And for a solid half an hour we were chatting one-on-one. And the fact we had the half hour meant there was enough time for my awestruck-fanboyness to wear off and attempt a real conversation. The next half hour saw a few others enter the conversation and led into a terrific JLU panel that was myself, Dwayne, Paul Storrie, and a half dozen other fans. Plus a got a few things signed, including the Static Shock trade that DC put back in print and is highly recommended.
I kept up with the forum over the next few years, but kind of petered out when Dwayne left the Justice League comic. Just the other day though I was thinking about both stopping by again, as well as wondering if I saw Dwayne at another convention had too much time passed to bring up the Detroit Trinitycon (concerned with coming off like a weirdo mentioning a run-in from 5 years ago).
I just finished watching All-Star and heard about this during a google search, and I swear it was like a punch to the gut. Superheroes won't be as interesting without him, and dialogue won't sound as good. He treated his fans like they were old friends, and told the fantastic with honesty. He was a gentleman and a damn fine storyteller. Rest in Peace, Maestro.
Have a good day. John Cage
It's great to see you again, John Cage, even under these circumstances. You might remember me as Fone Bone from Toon Zone. Dwayne was one of a kind and the best writer of cartoons ever. He was always quick to let me know when I was being a Bonehead and that just made me appreciate him all the more. RIP Dwayne.

This is indeed a sad day.
Dwayne McDuffie had an EXPERT talent at writing comics and shows. What made him stand out more to me than any other writer was his TALENT/INTELLIGENCE in making EVERY SINGLE character in his stories seem relevant and able to contribute. For example, most writers of JLA would have the story focus on the big 3 (superman, batman, wonder woman) and other the characters would only seem to be "in the way" or just filler. In DM's stories, he made you seem to respect all characters.
His Milestone line introduced me to comics, and I came back to comics during his Static Shock TV show years later....
It's quite sad, but I will always have happy thoughts of his books, shows and movies.
R.I.P

Wow....when I read that he had passed, I was DUMBFOUNDED and so, I have a memory of Dwayne that I want to share: It was 20007, and we were living in NC., (Where my family is from) I'm from N.C.. I used to watch Justice League with my daughters all the time. They were pretty young and they still enjoyed spending time with Daddy, and we ALL loved cartoons (althought THEIR faves were decidedly more "lil girlish" with singing and such), so it made for good bonding times. One day, as we sat watching the credits after one particular episode, one of my daughters said "Hey Dad...he's got the same last name as us. Maybe you should call him and see if we're related." (Little girls seem to always think that their fathers can do almost anything, so they actually believed I could reach him). I told them that I would contact him (just for giggles). Anyway, a day or two went by and I had forgotten to reach out until my oldest daughter reminded me of my promise, so I sat down at my computer, found an e-mail address for Mr. McDuffie, and fired away...NEVER, EVER, EVER expecting a response. I have to say, that I was highly surprised when, a few days later, I got one. And it wasn't a canned, automated response. He actually took the time to write us back. It was really short, but it meant a lot to my girls to see it. It simply said: "My Dad's from Aiken SC. We might be related, as I was invited to a family reunion in NC last year. Anyway, thanks for the kind words!" I know it wasn't much, but he gained two lifelong fans that day that thoroughly enjoyed watching "The show that "cousin Dwayne" worked on" from then on. Just thought I'd share.
