More irony, aside from the fact that his last work was about Superman's "death", the newest issues of Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man are about death (I know he didn't write these). In fact the last three words Spider-Man said at the end of the issue is "... NO ONE DIES!"

I haven't been here in a while (not specific to this board, I haven't done much message-boarding at all lately, due to time constraints) but those who know me know I've been a fan of Dwayne's work since reading the third Damage Control mini in 1991, and have been commiserating with him since the AOL Warriors of Color board. After hearing the news, I was so stunned that I didn't know how to react immediately. I finally wrote up this piece, because I wanted people to know how important this guy was:

I've come back here because I wanted to share it in a place where people who share my appreciation for the man and his work congregate. I miss him too, and can't believe he's gone. It's not lost on me that some of our greatest comic creators; Mark Gruenwald, Mike Wieringo, and now Dwayne McDuffie have all suffered early deaths due to heart disease. I hope some kind of campaign can get going within the comics community to urge early, regular screenings, even before age 40, for the warnings signs of this affliction. We can't afford to lose the people who have given us so much.

Heart disease, while #1, isn’t the only thing that can take wonderfully creative people from us all too young. Mike Parobeck was a truly wonderful and underrated penciller in the early 1990s, known especially for his work on the short-lived Justice Society series, Batman Adventures, El Diablo, etc. was taken from us all too young at the age of 30, from complications of Type I diabetes.

In the age of the overly detailed artists such as Rob Liefeld, Parobeck’s simplistic style was a breath of fresh air. I remember him being taken completely by surprise when he won Favorite Penciller of the very first GEnie™ (a dial-up text-based online service) Comics RoundTable (RT) “Thunderbolt” Awards, presented at the GEnie Comics RT’s TeleCon I. TeleCon I was, to the best of my knowledge the very first online comic book convention, which I as the Assistant Sysop in charge of the chat rooms, ran, and which Dwayne McDuffie, Matt Wayne, and several other pros, including Len Strazewski (the writer on some of Mike Parobeck’s books), participated in. Yes, there was a TeleCon II the following year.

In gratitude, Mike drew a special Justice League sketch for the folks at the GEnie Comics RT, which I still own the original pencils of (framed, of course). Artist Bill Neville (also a Comics RT and TeleCon participant) colored it and uploaded the results to the Comics RT’s Library. Unfortunately, of course, GEnie itself has been gone for over a decade now, a victim of both the rise of the Web and of the Y2K bug, which the GEnie mainframes were never fixed to handle.

I still remember the shock I felt when I logged into the Comics RT one day in early July of 1996, and saw the ASCII rose at the top of the Comics RT page that announced the passing of another comics great. It had then recently been posted for the likes of Gardner F. Fox, etc., but that day, it was for Mike Parobeck. I was stunned. I haven’t felt that stunned by the passing of someone I barely knew personally (I had spoken to him on the phone just after the TeleCon) ever before, nor since until a few days ago when I found the message in my Email announcing the passing of our beloved Dwayne McDuffie (himself also an active member of the Comics RT).

And thanks to Kynn for his efforts to keep this place going; I fully support that and am willing to contribute money if it is needed.

It's true, sometimes there's just no way to see it coming; death comes in all too many forms. We all just need to take care of ourselves as best as we can, so we can be here for the people who care about us.

Another death in the comics industry that blindsided me recently actually occurred in July of last year; I was reminiscing about some of my favorite comics of my youth, and just out of curiosity googled Rik Levins, the artist on a good chunk of Mark Gruenwald's landmark Captain America run. This is what I found:

It really bothered me that it wasn't covered by any of the major news sites, and that I hadn't learned of it till months after the fact. I was able to bring it to the attention of one of my colleagues at AICN, just in time for him to include Rik in his annual commemoration of those who passed in the preceding year:

But still, it drives home how the people we admire can pass so quickly and sometimes even without notice. I am grateful that is one thing we don't have to worry about with Dwayne.
