Community Talk #5 - Social Groups/Stereotypes

Postby Sebastian on Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:53 am

Welcome to the fifth community talk. :)
What social group do you fit in?What do people consider you to be?What do you think about stereotypes and about grouping people? Is it good or bad? This topic can also be used for stereotype jokes or chat about how that's a stupid thing to do,depending on how mature you are.

I don't hang out with a specific type of group, just close friends and we are very different from each other. We have similar interests though but overall, as a group, we don't fit into any description.

At school, I'm basically small bits of various stereotypes combined into one and I don't fit into any social group overall.

I think stereotypes are bad. It's just stupid to categorize a person as just another something when really everyone is unique and can be their own person, not just a stereotype. Being fit into a stereotype is bad too because it comes with negative stuff. Everyone assumes you must do something commonly associated with it, mock you about it and even think low of you for being whatever stereotype you are.

Yeah, me neither but I think it's the kind of people you hang out with or stereotype.

Well typically a stereotype is tied to a certain corresponding social group.
I want to be.... Much than more.

I usually hang out with very different people as well but I tend to get closer to those than like rock and metal. \m/ (but I'm a friend with anybody that's nice to me)
Some would say I'm emo but that's just stupid,I'm rather a combination of rocker and rapper.I've actually lost most of what made me "gangsta" and after cutting my hair and starting to dress more colorful...I have lost everything that made me even slightly "emo".Right now,I'm a normal looking rocker.

I'm the weirdest combination ever.. My outfit is a mix of hipster, hippie and rock, I love rock music, I'm gamer and I'm sometimes a bit geeky, but I'm tall and pretty athletic. I have a couple of groups I stand with that represent that. I have the "popular" group (= guys who are quite popular, but not the most), a group with mostly geeks and gamers and a group with guys who are in a rock band together.
Ben Tenerator Rex and _N_iCKeuH_ :D Those damn passwords xD

People have called me hipster before.
Maybe in a way I act sometimes like that and some of my clothes are hipster-ish (I even listen to indie bands)....but calling me a hipster would be an overstatement.

But like a friend of mine once told me: "What the hell are you?Rocker?Punker?Metalhead?Hipster?Rapper? You seem to be a little of everything."

Not really, would a social group be something like a sports team, or a club? Because there aren't to many stereotypes there.

Not really sure what to classify my friends as...
